Sample Club: Drumstick Engraving

The musical instrument industry is becoming a hot industry for personalized lasered products. Take these drumsticks for example, show how easy it is to turn an ordinary item into a beautifully engraved one of a kind piece.

Follow the instructions below to engrave your very own unique drumsticks, and then sell them for an easy profit.

Materials:
  • 5 wood drumsticks
    (www.activemusician.com - product #MD.DSR16 - 16" Rosewood Drumstick pair)

Note: The drumsticks used for this project are 16" in length with a circumference of 1.905" (at the shaft). If you use drumsticks that are a different length or thickness the artwork will need to be adjusted for the different measurements. The formula for calculating the circumference of a cylinder is: circumference = 3.14 x thickness (width).

Files:
Right click on the file names below and choose "Save target as." Open the file in CorelDraw 8 or later. Please note all files are Raster only, and will be engraved using the Epilog Rotary Attachment.

1)

Note: This step is only for figuring out the page size to engrave the drumstick artwork. If your drumsticks are the same size as the ones described (16" x 0.635"), you may skip this step.

First begin by measuring the length of a drumstick. Set the page width to match the length of the drumstick.

Now measure the thickness or width of your drumstick and use that number to figure out the circumference of your drumstick using the formula: circumference = 3.14 x thickness (width). Set the circumference of the drumstick as your page height.

Hint: If you are using artwork that you would like to wrap around the drumstick then multiply the page height times the number of times that you would like the artwork to wrap around the handle.

2)

Open the flame_name.cdr file and send the file to the laser using the wood settings in the owner's manual. Place a drumstick on the Rotary Attachment so that the tip of the drumstick is on the left, and use the Clamp to hold the tip down to the rotary wheels (pictured to the right). Next, use the manual focus gauge to focus the laser onto the thickest part of the shaft of the drumstick.

Then Press Go!

Engravings of all the artwork files in this sample club are pictured below. Note: Add a custom name to the flame_name.cdr or a custom graphic to the riptide_orion.cdr for a more desired look.
